Hi Wes - Another Great read. Did you know about Alouette 1, a former Canadian research satellite? Alouette 1 studied the ionosphere and was launched in 1962; it was the first satellite constructed by a country other than the Soviet Union or the United States. The name "Alouette" came from the French for "skylark" and the French-Canadian folk song of the same name. A key device on Alouette was the radio antenna, consisting of thin strips of beryllium copper bent into a slight U-shape and then rolled into small disks, similar to a measuring tape. Its a classic dysfunctional marriage. Canada has been freeloading off an inequitable trade and defense relationship for decades. They define themselves largely as being apposite the US. Trump’s approach is rude and counter productive but as is Canada’s response. It seems they will shoot themselves in the head in order to shoot Trump/US in the foot.
You understand how such agreements are negotiated, yes? That they are *agreed to* by all parties?
America has been happy to “freeload” right back. That’s literally been the deal, the latest of which Trump declared was the greatest deal ever done at the time (yes, Freeland kicked his ass, but that’s a US problem, not an us problem).
“Sometime around 2027 or 2028, if Telesat’s schedule holds, a Falcon 9 will lift off from American soil carrying Canadian satellites built to reduce Canada’s dependence on American space infrastructure. There’s something almost too on the nose about that image, and I don’t think Ottawa missed the irony either.”
Let’s hope that Falcon 9 doesn’t mysteriously explode on lift off. Oops. Sorry Canada. Trump may still be in office so….keeping our 51st state in a position of dependence. Just a thought.

Canada should cooperate with EU. We have the same problem. Mid tier (and low tier) powers unite!
