Spain Ramps Up Leopard Deliveries to Ukraine: More Tanks, More Headaches for Russia

Ah, Spain. My soon-to-be political asylum nation once I’m exiled from the United States for speaking out against the regime.

I need to brush up on mi Espanol, I suppose.

Out of the many nations that have donated military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine over the past three years, Spain is pretty far down the list. But don’t let that fool you.

It seems Spain has decided to lean into its role as an unexpected heavyweight in Ukraine’s armor game. Three months ago, Madrid announced the delivery of 10 additional Leopard 2A4 tanks to Kyiv, marking another boost to Ukraine’s mechanized forces.

This makes Spain the world's largest donor of Leopard 2 tanks at about 30 units total.

The shipment, which also included backhoes and a sizable stockpile of anti-tank rockets (because even with drones, you can never have too many ways to turn Russian armor into scrap metal), shows Spain’s growing commitment to keeping Ukraine’s forces well-supplied in their fight against Russian aggression.

The tanks in question had been sitting in Spanish storage for years before being sent for extensive refurbishment at General Dynamics European Land Systems-Santa Bárbara Sistemas (GDELS-SBS) in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Seville.

The process wasn’t just a fresh coat of paint and an oil change—these machines underwent rigorous testing, repairs, and systems checks to ensure they were battle-ready.
