Thanks, excellent write up. I was suspicious of just one missile being sent unless it was a smaller nation like North Korea or made to look like them but I'm not so sure they have the technology just yet. Sub launch would really confuse who sent it but I did not think of post blast forensics providing a quick answer.

I also wondered why they need to have retaliation in the air before the enemy struck especially if it was just one and wasn't going to disable their ability to respond. Would Washington not be a better target, or worse I suppose?

It was definitely a far-out scenario that the filmmakers presented. Some parts were incredibly accurate, like the sets look very much like the real-world counterparts, and the showing of the human bureaucracy involved was pretty accurate; how real soldiers and gov-types would respond is portrayed well. But the premise itself was flawed. In the event of a single missile, 99% chance we absorb the strike and analyze. Overall, I liked the movie. And I like Katherine Bigelow's other movies.
