It is truly a shame when Nations call on their sons and daughters to serve and sacrifice only to be forgotten when that need ends—being vilified for life choices, race, or identity. It is also a shared shame in Canada when our First Nations heroes, who fought and sacrificed during WWII and Korea, were denied fundamental rights on their return to Canada, returning as heroes and then being required to ask for a pass to leave their First Nation reserves to seek work.

Oh my. Of course he deserved a medal - and better after the war - but at least he knew that those who were there, who knew him, valued him.
