It's very easy to extrapolate the result of that titanic mistake. It's such a stupid thing to do that I'm shocked our orange Kremlin puppet didn't do it immediately.

Such use would give Putin the permission structure to use tactical nukes in Ukraine. We would not intercede NATO would fracture and collapse, don't you think?

Wes O'Donnell's avatar

I thought hard about this, Mitch. Ultimately, at least at first, I think NATO would hold because of the threat Putin still poses.

Mitch Keamy's avatar

And when I say NATO, I guess I mean that the USA would be hard put to condemn Russia, at the same time that the rest of the the EU would be enraged.

Hans Torvatn's avatar

Probably. If he refrains and goes for a deal? Let’s hope we never find out.

My proximate concern is that France, as the sole possessor of unencumbered nukes, would become the focus of the reciprocal deterrence at a delicate moment in European politics. I assume that the US would not allow the use of American nukes based in Europe, although I am foggy on the disposition and control of those weapons in Germany and the UK.

Anyone who thought it couldn’t get any worse than this year (2026, to the end of October) underestimated the effects of dropping a nuclear bomb on a granite mountain. A sobering analysis, though it makes one want to reach for the nearest bottle.

This is the first time in all your articles that you pissed me off. Nuclear bomb to target an actual non-threat. How do I know? Because the USA never nuked North Korea. You will be no longer respected as being responsible players. You attacked Iran, sank its ships, bombed its cities. What happens when you use a nuke? Iran will have zero fucks to give and destroy the rest of Middle Eastern oil production. They will have cause to attack civilian Americans throughout the world and you would have deserved it. The squishier the better. Russia will have no reason not to nuke Ukraine and if Ukraine falls, it will be a geopolitical disaster for the USA. You killed millions in Iraq for oil and now prepared to nuke for oil. The USA disgusts me and as long as your regime holds power, you are all responsible. As I said, you pissed me off.

Johnny, anger and disgust can be useful tools for change. Many Americans agree with your sentiment and are actively trying to fix this nonsense

You are really scary here Wes. And you are not the only one. Yesterday I read another war interested blogger discuss the same scenario. He was focused more on IQ4. And his version was even more scary, he viewed Trump as an Herostratos. If I can’t have a Nobel price why not go all the way and nuke the fuckers? That will show everyone! Be that as it may, but his other prediction was that Putin would see it as allowing himself to do the same in Ukraine. The consequences are absolutely unforseeable. But another question. Would Trump be obeyed? He needs a chain of military personnel following orders that definitely can be interpreted as illegal.

Wes O'Donnell's avatar

That's actually a great question, Hans. I know more than a few Air Force officers who would refuse such an order.

Hans Torvatn's avatar

Actually I think the order will resisted if it comes. But the fact that there is a discussion is scary. And will lead to proliferation. Who’s next? Alabama? Who’s Next?https://share.google/Xxydkg4g0xDBUFyZi

What are the chances that nuclear use just creates another Fordo? "Obliterated" not obliterated?

Wes O'Donnell's avatar

Highly likely, although nukin' it precludes anyone from visiting the site for 500 years to verify lol

Sad times when it has come to discussing this. People are joking Trump may do this to divert attention from his potential election setback

Democracies like S. Korea, Japan, Australia, the Nordics, and Canada getting nuclear weapons would make democracy and freedom much safer in those countries, and the world. It would do a tremendous amount of good to deter authoritarianism and make it look less strong and attractive. It would make the world a much better place.

The destruction by Iran of the oil fields and infrastructure in the Middle East plus the fertiliser and helium production would pretty much screw the world.

The world has a lot to fear from the orange insane tyrant.

I hope that if the worst happens all those billionaire enablers of Trump have their safe houses removed from their grasping hands.

The argument is the difference between tactics and strategy in military engagements. Tactics allow you to win the engagement. Bad strategy loses you the war. And in the case of nukes, your civilisation. If the US ‘thinks’ it is authorised to use nukes against a country that is no substantive threat to it, what is some squalid shit fest of a country, like Israel, authorised to do, when it knows, with some justification, that everybody hates it?

Chris Kelso's avatar

Using a nuke would require an immediate nuclear response from anyone. Otherwise, if nothing happened, others would start using them as we did. Then someone screws up and someone else feels butt hurt and a full exchange occurs. Any president who doesn't understand this needs to be immediately removed from office. No American military officer would allow the use of a nuclear weapon.
