A new analysis says Ukraine just logged its fastest stretch of territorial gains since the summer 2023 counteroffensive. The numbers being cited by the Telegraph are about 201 square kilometers, roughly 78 square miles, recaptured over a five-day window in mid-February.
Most of the movement appears to be on the southern front, east of Zaporizhzhia.
So what changed?
One reported factor is Russian battlefield communications getting messy. Multiple reports tie the timing to disruptions in how Russian forces were using Starlink, with Russian coordination taking a hit when they couldn’t rely on it the same way. I’m going to be careful here because the fog of war is real, and everyone loves a simple explanation. Still, if your comms go sideways in a drone war, your whole day goes sideways with it.
